On Saturday we took a hike, and it could be counted as one of our best hikes ever! Orsi and Zoli had suggested it and got us excited by showing us some pictures online. We decided the best plan would be to rent a car to get to the remote location in the Visegradi Hills. Carrying our food, water, map, and GPS, we started the descent into the low lands at about noon.
This is the view from the top, in the village of Dobogókő. In the distance is the Danube, and the area is known as the Danube Bend. This is about 35 miles northwest of Budapest.
For about two hours we walked down from 730m above sea-level to about 225m, the last half hour through another canyon called Lukacs Gorge. Then we entered the Rám Szakadék canyon and began climbing back up along the stream.
The gorge got narrower and narrower, to a point where railings and ladders were provided to keep climbing. This area was amazing! A geocaching team has set up an "earthcache" here, so Jack paused on the ladder for the necessary pose.
It was a perfect spring day. There were many others enjoying the May Day holiday by hiking here, so there were even some back-ups at certain points, where people had to wait to use the ladders.
The best part of the experience is sharing it with others. We really enjoy being able to spend time with Orsi and Zoli.
Once out of the canyon, the hiking wasn't as pleasant. Not so much that it was uphill, but that logging equipment had totally ruined a formerly smooth path back up the mountain. By the time we got back to the car, we had walked 13 kilometers or over eight miles. So, for all of you potential visitors, here is an experience waiting for you. We would love to be your tour guides.
