Balaton Weekend

We spent the extended weekend in Balaton and Komarom with our friends Balázs, Dori, and Zoli. Weather-wise it was the best weather of the spring! On Saturday we traveled with Dori and Zoli to the Kovács wine cellar on the north shore of Lake Balaton. After picking up Balázs we proceeded to Keszthely, where we walked through the town center to take in a tour of the Festetics Palace. On our way back to Tagyon we stopped at the Szigliget Castle ruins, which date back to 1260--thus the 750th anniversary! Our last stop of the day was at the cellar of János Molnár, a neighbor of the Kovács family. He is not only a wine producer but also a wine collector.

On Sunday we attended the Reformed Church in Zánka, which is housed in a building over 700 years old. After a delicious Sunday dinner of meat soup and rétes, we drove to the next hill over, called Hegyestu, a beautiful basalt formation on which we hiked to the top for another beautiful panorama. Once back to the wine cellar we packed up and left with Dori and Zoli for Komarom, where we spent the night with Zoli's parents.

Monday was a national holiday (Pentecost), so we enjoyed an extra day of beautiful sunshine and relaxation. After a long walk with the dogs along the Danube, and performing a little yard-work of pruning the hedge, we went out for a delicious dinner with Zoli's parents. Following that we said our goodbyes and came back to Budapest to once again begin our work week.

We will follow this post with additional posts specific to our various weekend activities.
