Danube Flooding

We have now had three straight days of sunshine. Today it was really summer as the temps were in the mid eighties. But with so much rain in the last three weeks, the Danube is really flooded. I can't give any official numbers but I would guess it is twenty feet higher than usual.

Right now there is no traffic on the river. The cruise ships cannot pass under the bridges. The Trefort boat trip for this Friday, originally scheduled for two weeks ago, will be canceled. The number 2 tram along the river is only operating partially, as the tracks going under the foot of the Chain Bridge are under water.

We decided to see for ourselves the extent of the flooding. Enjoy the pictures.

In the photo below, the river is over a road and a foot path where people can walk to the gang plank to get to the restaurant. Normally the gang plank is a steep downward walk!

Here you see the water flowing by the Parliament.

Danube facts:
The Danube's origin is in the Black Forest of Germany.
The Danube final destination is the Black Sea.
The Danube River Basin covers over 800,000 square kilometers.
The Danube passes through or by 19 European countries.

Hi Guys,

I do not know if you get some news in English about the flood elsewhere, but at Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County lots of villages under water, and some small rivers are really big. Here is a video about the flood: http://www.videohirek.hu/video/47108/arviz-hetfo-esti-videos-osszefoglalo

Bless you,

Wow. Of course we wouldn't have heard about this except from your blog.

Great pictures, albeit not the greatest situation!

I was down there yesterday I really couldn't believe my eyes. The river was so high.
I heard it should be going down now that the rain has stopped.

I am so saddened by the horrific flooding in Budapest. We are supposed to start our rivercruise July 19 from Budapest to Prague and we are concerned about the high water and our cruise will become a busride. Are there any long range weather predictions for the heavy rains to continue over the summer. Any info would be so helpful.
Thank you, Audrey

Danube is famous for its river cruising and most of all people like to go Danube for river cruising. But sometimes natural calamities affect people from such type of enjoyments.
