Autumn Hiking in Hungary

Because of the October 23 commemoration of the 1956 revolution, we had a five-day weekend. The weather was perfect--70 degrees and sunny--for getting some hiking in. We decided to hike in the Buda Hills on Sunday. We hiked from Budakeszi to Normafa to Tunderhegy (Fairy Hill) to the bus-stop at Szep Juhaszné. It was almost five miles and a lot of up and down but really beautiful. Most of the trees are completely green yet with a few yellow interspersed. At the very end of the trail we were pleasantly surprised to find a tree full of orange leaves.

On Monday we decided to take our teammates, Paul and Erin, and fellow ESIer from Miskolc, Abby, as well as friend from Zeeland, Bernie, on our favorite hike. We took the tram, metro, and bus for the two hours to Dömös to do the Rám Szakadék hike. This was our fourth time doing this hike and we never get tired of it. From top to bottom is 300 meters climbing up a canyon that has a kind of waterfall running through it. There are many places that you need to climb a ladder and hold on to railings in order to scale the rock. There were many other hikers that thought it was a perfect opportunity to do this hike on such a beautiful day, so there was a lot of waiting time at the ladders. When we got to the top Bernie pulled out a bottle of "Hilltop Irsai Oliver" wine to share before we headed back down a different trail.  The whole hike took about five hours. It was a wonderful time'
