The new 9th grade students are referred to as "green peaches' until they have matured enough to move into the sárgabarack (yellow peach) phase of their education. The last week of October is the time to celebrate that change with a special celebration. There are four 9th grade classes at Trefort that competed with each other. Jack (and Erin and Paul) mostly teach the 9D English/Hungarian dual language students. Each class section had to compete with a variety of tasks including eating soup from a glass with a small spoon, writing and performing poems praising their class teacher, the class teacher blindfolded identifying their own student out of the four classes, and performing original skits and dances. The school principal and other school representatives judged the competition and awarded the winner with first pick of the cakes that were given to each class. The 9D's were the clear winners. We were really impressed with how much this class showed their maturity.
