Ballagás 2009

Today was the Ballagás at Trefort. Translated it means "school leavers' ceremony". It might be compared to graduation, but all of these students still have to take their finals tests. The day began with 9th and 10th graders arriving with bunches of flowers that they used to decorate rooms, hallways, stairways, soccer goals, and more; lots of lilacs! The honored students begin their procession at 10:00, saying goodbye to the rooms and hallways. Perhaps you can pick out the six classes below, using the balloons as a guide (or you can actually see the class numbers in chalk at the front of each group!)

At 10:30, when the classes were assembled in the courtyard the official program began. The picture below shows a very small stage with the choir in the back, and the principal giving his address. The choir sang four songs that were interspersed in the program. The four women in the foreground are the assistant principals.

The program was finished just before noon. At the conclusion, the students released their balloons, signifying their leaving from the school.
Afterward Jack was able to greet some of his nine students that celebrated their ballagás. Below is Dénes Szilágyi from the 12B class.

Here Jack is pictured with Dávid Vincze, Gábor Farkas, and Laci (Lászlo), who are also from 12B.
This is another event in our school that demonstrates the high regard Hungarians have for tradition. Every bit of preparation and each part of the ceremony follows the same pattern that has been used for many years. You will notice the little pouch that David carries; it has the years of his experience at Trefort (2005-2009), along with a picture of the schools namesake, Agoston Trefort. Inside the pouch are little memories of the school.

I was the photographer, or I handed the camera off so I could be in the picture.
