My last two classes today would normally be a "double". Same class of 12th graders, twice. Today they came to me before class asking if they could go home early, this being such a nice day. I said, "OK, but we must have at least one class." So when I arrived in the room I wrote this on the board:
After giving some thought,
perhaps too much, I now
realize the need to give
in to my students and cancel a
lesson for them.
For this to happen, however,
only those who pay me 500 forint
out of their own pockets can
leave the building at 13:30.
Sorry, it has to be.
Slowly a look of amazement spread over their faces, and perhaps wonder. I asked them if this amounted to bribery, or if it was legal. I was hoping to arouse some anger over this. One boy actually gave me the money right away, but the rest were a bit hesitant. I kept a straight face for five minutes, discussing this moral issue. Finally I pointed out the initial letter of each line; then they laughed and groaned and realized that they had really felt foolish.
