Esztergom

On Saturday we spent the day in the historic village of Esztergom. It was the capital of Hungary until 1241 A.D Then Buda became the capital. Esztergom is 65 km from Budapest. We were able to reach it by bus in 75 minutes.
Esztergom is located at the Danube Bend so was a strategic location militarily. The museum was full of artifacts dating back to the first century. Esztergom was the site of a Roman settlement in the first century. Here's a view of the fortress castle and Basilica.

This memorial is of the crowning of St Istvan, the first king of Hungary, crowned in 1000 A.D.

Here is a view from the castle of the Basilica.

This is the Basilica in Esztergom. It was built in 1822. It is the largest Basilica in Hungary. That's Jack in front of the pillar to give you some perspective.

The inside was beautiful but unfortunately there was a service starting shortly after we arrived. There was a cord with a sign saying"nem tourist" so we didn't get the whole tour...next time.
