Hiking and Boating in Budapest

How to spend a beautiful Saturday in Budapest:

  • take public transportation to Margit Sziget (Margaret Island) which, according to Budapest Tour Guide, "provides a peaceful hideaway from hectic downtown Budapest with large green areas, flowery gardens and old trees. The islands attractions include romantic walkways, medieval ruins and a small zoo. This is what we saw:
lots of storks on their nests in the zoo

a jogging trail that goes all the way around the 2.5 km island

lily pads (can you see the frog")

St Michael's church on the island built originally in the 12th century

Convent ruins from the 12th century where Szent Margit lived and is now buried there.

  • Take a BKV boat on the Danube:
We had heard that there was a BKV (Budapest Public Transportation System) boat that we could catch to travel on the Danube within the city limits. We had never seen it or known where we could catch it. Today we found a dock on Margit Island where we could catch it. For only 450 forint (about $2) we could ride the boat to any number of spots. We got on and took it to the end stop. It was a delightful way to see the city.

We are really going to miss this city!
