Vénasszonyok Nyara
We have been enjoying beautiful weather; cool, crisp mornings becoming warm, sunny, cloudless afternoons. It has been shorts weather for us again; although, judging by the looks we are getting from the locals, it's against the law to wear shorts in the autumn. It has been in the upper 60's every afternoon. I told one of my 11th graders that we called this Indian summer; the Hungarians call it vénasszonyok nyara, which is translated "old woman's summer". Which do you think makes more sense?

Did you get arrested? :) I think Indian summer is best.

I would translate it "vénasszonyok nyara" rather like crone's summer or tabby's summer. I tell you the reason: We call it like this because in the villages the old women are sit out at summer times to gossip around, but when the weather cools down they can't continue doing it. When it warms up a bit again they can sit out and continue...
